Not-for-profit organization dedicated to providing technology solutions for international field-based wildlife conservation, partner with the Wildlife Conservation Network (WCN).
Principal Technology Consultant
Work with wildlife conservation organizations around the world (remotely and on-site) to plan, design, procure and install custom, secure and sustainable field technology solutions. Focus on n-tier computer network infrastructure, hardware and software, databases, data storage systems, communications systems, imaging systems, backup systems (data and power), Internet-based information portals and even robotics.
Key Accomplishments:
- Conduct site assessments, specify needed technology, secure funding, design the architecture and plan/execute the project on-site in accordance with local government regulations.
- Project successes have led to several follow-up engagements.

Built (ground-up) and directed the corporate IT function, supporting (24x7x365) global business operations with remote offices in New York and London. Hired, trained and managed a high-performance staff of 6, including a lead programmer, database developer, systems administrator, operations specialist/Webmaster, software engineers and outside ad hoc consultants.
- Built and managed build of products and services contributing to a several-times increase in corporate revenue.
- Planned, architected and managed the high-availability (99%) 20-server UNIX/DEC Alpha-driven fault-tolerant LAN/WAN environment, as well as Internet/Intranet services, database administration/ development, application development, helpdesk and telecom functions.
- Headed the analysis, development and maintenance of all browser-based user-centric UIs, as well as front-end and back-end code libraries. Ensured all applications were easily maintained, fast and reliable. Initiated the use of Perl early on as the sole Perl programmer.
- Instituted all corporate IT policies and procedures, focusing on security, code development/delivery, version control, library usage and maintenance. Also developed corporate use policies governing systems, services and tools.
- Defined the architecture, built and launched several platform independent, Perl-DBI/DBD based database products. Managed build of a global index monitor product (GIM) for a high-profile client, later evolving into the firm's flagship product. GIM attracted new large international investment firms/banking clients and ultimately generated 30% of all company revenue.
- Built a Short Interest system requiring almost zero maintenance, quickly evolving into the product with the greatest ROI.
- Contributed to numerous database upgrades and both version and platform migrations supporting the Securities History System (SHS). Also led the development of several associated products using the database, improving overall performance and function of SHS. SHS accounted for 30% of gross revenue.
- Designed and launched the first corporate Intranet, later evolving into an important central portal for corporate functions fully integrated with CRM, defect tracking, version control and NOC. Functionality included self-maintenance tools (email and database), backup system tools, departmental home pages and documentation.
- Participated in many server and desktop migrations, including desktop environment to Windows, and the back-office core from Sun to DEC.
- Guided the internal product code revision process, and led the upgrade of all corporate server hardware and databases from Progress to cross-platform Sybase, incorporating fiber channel RAID arrays.
- Constructed a secure corporate data center running an energy solution enabling uninterrupted operation of all critical systems. Maintained redundant FTP servers receiving more than 500 client hits a day.
- Managed IT due-diligence effort in preparation for a successful corporate merger. Retained by the new parent to assist in the smooth transition of all technology.
- Member of Board of Directors from 1981 to 2000.
